# Manifolds (Differentieerbare varieteiten) Blok 1, 2020/2021

This is the web-site for the course "Differentieerbare varieteiten" given in blok 1, Fall 2020. Here you will find all the practical informations about the course, changes that take place during the year, lecture notes, etc.
When, where, etc:

THE LECTURES:

• Mondays: 11:00-12:45 (Live-Teams).
• Wednesdays: 11:00-12:45 (Live-Teams).

LECTURER: Marius Crainic.

THE WERKCOLLEGES:

• Mondays: 09.00 - 10.45; Teams (and other?).
• Wednesdays: 09.00 - 10.45; Teams (and other?).

TEACHING ASSISTANTS: Maarten Mol, Willem Smilde.

HOMEWORKS: Each week you will receive a homework that which you have to "hand in" the week after, before the last lecture. Please keep in touch with the teaching assistans about the way you prepare/send the homeworks (e.g. files, or just photos of handwritten solutions); in particular, please do not send your homework to the lecturer (the your homework may get lost ...).

Here I will soon add a link where you can check the marks for the homeworks, quizzes, etc.

Marks: will be made of several items, subject to some minimal requirements.

• Hand in exercises- see above. The mathematical quality of the writing (judged as not good, good or very good) will also play an important role (20%) in the way the exercise is marked; e.g. a "perfect solution" may be marked by an 8, 9 or 10, depending on how well it is explained. The average of the marks for all the homeworks will give one mark HW (maximum 10). This will count for 40% of the final mark.
• Quizzes: at the start of some werkcolleges there will be 10 min quizzes, with multiple choice questions. That will count in the final mark by 10%. They are not compulsory and, while not doing the quizzes may be "the safest approach", please keep in mind that they are meant to help you learn and increase your mark; furthermore, they also give us an indication of how active you were (again something that can have only a positive effect). Anyway, the average of all the quizzes will give one mark \$Q\$.
• Drawing challenges:
1. one group drawing: in the werkcollege you will be part of a group (in total 7-8 groups) and each group gets 10 min (in one of the werkcolleges) to show and explain one or more pictures/drawings that reflects one concept from the last two lectures. The choice of the concept left to the grous, with the hope that you will be very creative and ... surprise us! It will come with an evaluation in the system (not enogh)/(good)/(very good) and that will count for 5% of the final mark/.
2. weekly individual drawings: each week, next to the homework, you will also be asked to make a drawing about a specific part (to be communicated by the lecturer). It will be evaluated similarly to the group drawing and, the average, will count for another 5% of the final mark. We are also thinking about a voting system so that we/you can choose "the picture of the week" (just that we do not want to force anyone to make their weekly drawing public; i.e. we can vote only on those drawings that are (voluntarily) shared with everyone else.
• Final exam: there will be a "final exam", that will count for 40% of the final mark. We will try to set it up in a way that gives you more time- e.g. you receive the problems at 9:00 and you have to hand them in at 15:00 (we still to see what is possible without clashes in the schedule).

• Bonus exercises: there may be some bonus exercises, depending on how it goes with the rest (we have used them in the past, when there was more time, i.e. not in the blok system). Those would be very difficult exercises (just a couple over the entire period) which allows you to earn "bonus points" (that would count around 5% in the final mark); they will not be compulsory (i.e. even without doing any of those you can still get a amximum mark at the end).

Coordinates of the exam: TBA (November 3? Or better on the 6th???)

• Minimal requirements: at least 4 for the average of the Homeworks, and at least 5 for the Final Exam. Also, there will be no automatic rounding up for marks below 6 (e.g. 5.95 will not be a passing mark but, in such borderline cases (if any), the participation in the werkcolleges (quizzes, questions, etc) may play a role).

Lecture notes: Please be aware that the lecture notes may still contain typos. So, if there is something that you do not understand, please ask it at the werkcollege; also, if you find typos, please communicate them to the teaching assistants. This will be of great help to improve the lecture notes and make them into a regular "dictaat" that can be printed for students.

In principle, I will be using the lecture notes from the previous two years, but which I will correct/improve as we go along with the course. But, once the material is posted on this page, I will no longer make changes that affect the numbering or the theorems, pagination, etc.So, in principle, once you printed a part, you do not have to print it again.

While the various parts of the lecture notes will be made available as we go, just for your curiosity, here is the link to the lecture notes of the last year. (but: DO NOT PRINT THEM!!!)

The schedule week by week (here we will add, after each lecture, a description of what was discussed in the lectures + the exercises from the lecture notes that you are supposed to do during the werkcollege).
