Summary

The music

Pictorial Wand is a one man progressive rock opera that reminds me of such projects as Leonardo-The Absolute Man by Magna Carta artists and Daniele Liverani's Genius project. The subject matter is somewhat mythical, the musical style is progressive with some slightly harder influences, but not to the degree that one would label this prog metal. This minimizes the presence of the narrator, the presence of one having in the past bullocksed up many-a-one project.

Frankly I hadn't the faintest idea who Mattis Sorum was, and this album's bio doesn't help in solving the problem. Apparently this two disc album is the debut of this one man band. A score of artists was employed for this project, none of whom known. So, clearly you do not need a score of well known people and big names to come up with a result.

The music is one flow and pretty ably manages to avoid the pitfalls on the path of a concept album, producing a varied sound, a melodic flow, never stinted by story taking presedence over music. There are sections dominated by vocals, sections dominated by keys and sections dominated by guitars. Even though minor influences of other artists are audible at times (heard a bit of Yngwie, for instance), these are sparse and, well, minor. The size of the group of musicians might have assisted on this part.

Conclusion

There are so many examples of rock operas by well known artists that have failed miserably. There is also a score of them that are decent, or good even. But I feel that Sorum on his debut has run to the front of the field, despite his total lack of experience or cooperation of well known people. Thus he has set down not just a good performance, but also a worthwhile concept album.
