The structure and dynamics of the solar corona and the interplanetary
plasma are reviewed. We discuss separately, insofar as possible,
the Bernoulli equation and the equation of continuity, as well as the
equation of state and the equation connecting the temperature T with
either the distance from the sun r or the density . Two introductory
sections describe simple graphical solutions for static models, with
T (r) either constant or determined by heat conduction. Dynamical
models can exhibit either accretion or solar wind, i. e. inflow
or outflow. The velocity of the solar wind near the earth can be
calculated using the Bernoulli equation only, from the measured
temperatures and densities near the s'm and near the earth. Accretion
would be obtained, for example, if the temperature of the corona
were < 480000 K or if the corona were adiabatic. A polytropic
model with T (reproducing the observed temperature distribution)
must involve a mode of energy transfer which is not influenced by
the field of gravitation (e. g., conduction). Using the equation
of continuity and the observed density distribution of the corona,
we calculate the velocity of the solar wind as a f'mction of r. The
solar wind can exist only because thermal energy from the corona
is carried far outwards from the sun by conduction. Otherwise the
outflowing matter could not overcome the gravitational attraction of
the s'm. Prominences are cool clouds in the corona. Their direction
of motion is mostly governed by maguetic fields. Along the field lines
they are mostly dragged by the surro'mding corona, whose streaming is
due to horizontal pressure differences in the lower corona produced by
unequal "wave-heating". Due to the enormous viscosity of the coronal
plasma and the filamentary structure of prominences, their motion is
largely laminar. The apparent weightlessness of prominences and their
similarity to terrestrial clouds is explained in the same way.

A review is given on the development of our ideas concerning stellar
atmospheres and their spectra. After some brief remarks concerning
the early comparisons, between stellar and laboratory spectra it is
emphasized that quantitative analysis of stellar spectra must involve
essentially three points: (1) spectrophotometric measurements; (2)
the theory of radiative and possibly convective transfer; and (3)
the atomic theory of absorption coefficients. After following them for

The radiofrequency radiation of the galaxy is shown to be analogous not
to the "quiet" but to the "disturbed" radiation of the sun (produced
by plasma oscillations). Many arguments point toward its origin on
stars with an "activity" qualitatively similar to that of the sun but
several billion times stronger. It is assumed that in these stars the
relation between radiofrequency radiation and the emission of cosmic
rays is similar to that observed for the sun by Forbush and Ehmert. In
the magnetic field of the galaxy this primary cosmic radiation is
"stored" by a factor 103 to 104, each particle
describing a complicated path until it is killed by a nuclear collision,
and directional isotropy established. The cutoff of the energy spectrum
at small energies, hitherto mostly ascribed to a solar magnetic dipole,
is attributed to the stopping power of interstellar matter. Some other
theories concerning the origin of cosmic rays are reviewed critically.

The curve of growth and the line contours of ~ Canis Majoris (cF8)
are explained by assuming large- scale turbulence with = 22 km/sec
or-less probably-rotation with an equatorial velocity v sin i 30
km/sec. Moreover, the intensity of the continuous background in the
range 4000-4100 A may be depressed by the crowding of lines to 70 per
cent of its original intensity. It is also possible that on top of
a normal reversing layer having a turbulent velocity of the order of
5-10 km/sec there is an optically thin layer produced by a field of
interlacing prominences which may be described by a large turbulent
velocity. The differences which K. 0. Wright found between the curves
of growth for neutral and those for ionized atoms, as well as low-and
high-excitation states, in solar-type stars can be interpreted by as-
suming that the turbulent velocity ~ increases with decreasing pressure,
following the law of continuity. The remaining inconsistencies are
traced to a probable "coupling" in the simultaneous determination of
turbulent velocity and excitation temperature. Reasons are given for
the conclusion that the solar excita- tion temperatures are closer
to 5400° or 5700° than to 4800° K. The use of "solar transition
probabilities" is considered critically. The meaning of effective
turbulent velocities is discussed. Errors resulting from the use of
a single curve of growth for an entire stellar spectrum are estimated
not to exceed z~ log NH = ± 0.47 if suitable mean values are used. The

I. A simple approximate method for calculating the widening of
spectral lines by a grating spectrograph is developed. It is shown that
the deviations from theory found recently by R. v. d. R. Woolley in
observations of atmospheric oxygen lines are due to this instrumental
effect. II. Woolley's measures of contours of solar lines are
affected by the same systematic error. III. i. It is shown that
in the range of line-widths, where Doppler effect comes into play,
the actual line-contours cannot be fully resolved with a grating of
the usual size. 2. Following Minnaert and Mulders, the limitations
of the Russell-Adams calibra- tion are discussed. 3. The exchange of
radiation in solar lines is considered. It is shown that in the case
of penultimate lines interlocking does not make quantitative spectral
analysis impossible. Interlocking may give a mechanism for producing
central intensity, which avoids the difficulties of the coffision theory
