Title: Line-Intensities in the Photosphere-Chromosphere Transition
Region. II: Observational Material from the 1961 Eclipse at Brač
Authors: Van Dessel, E. L.; Houtgast, J.; Koelbloed, D.
1973SoPh...33..375V Altcode:
We present results from eclipse spectra in the wavelength region
4588-4682 Å, taken during the eclipse of February 15, 1961 at Brač,
Yugoslavia. Absolute line intensities have been determined in the
photosphere-chromosphere transition region. The method of reduction is
discussed in Section 2 and the observed variation of the total intensity
as a function of the height is shown for a number of lines in Figures
5-8. The results for the Fe I lines are compared with computations
(as described in Paper I: van Dessel, 1970) for various solar model
atmospheres (Section 4). The model, which combines Holweger's (1967)
temperature distribution for the excitation temperature with the HSRA
model (Gingerich et al., 1971) for the electron temperature, yields
a better agreement than all pure LTE-models.

Title: The Representation of the Semi-Annual Variation of the
Geomagnetic Activity by an Annual Sine Wave
Authors: Houtgast, J.; Van Sluiters, A.
1973SoPh...31..513H Altcode:
The seasonal variation of the geomagnetic activity shows two sharp
maxima (in March and September) and two broader minima (in June and
December). It can only poorly be described by a double sine wave.

Title: Spectral Lines from Photosphere to Chromosphere, Observed
During the March 1970 Eclipse; A First Comparison with Theory (Papers
presented at the Proceedings of the International Symposium on the
1970 Solar Eclipse, held in Seattle, U. S. A. , 18-21 June, 1971.)
Authors: Houtgast, J.; Namba, O.; Rutten, R. J.; Wijbenga, J. W.
1971SoPh...21..281H Altcode: 1972SoPh...21..281H
A brief report is presented on observations of line profile variations
in the transition region from the photosphere to the chromosphere,
based on high-resolution eclipse spectrograms. We also show some
computations for several lines whose behaviour agrees in general with
the observations.

Title: Description of an Observational Method for Determining Absolute
Intensities in the Solar Spectrum between λ 2962 Å and λ 4087 Å
Authors: Houtgast, J.
1970SoPh...15..273H Altcode:
The results of measurements of absolute intensities in the spectrum
of the centre of the sun's disk in the wavelength region 2977-4087
Å have already been published (Houtgast 1965, 1968) and use has
been made of them on different occasions. The intensities at 206
spectral points have been given, chosen as much as possible between
the Fraunhofer lines, but well divided over the region. Each strip of
the Utrecht (Minnaert et al., 1940) and Göttingen (Brückner, 1960)
Atlases contains at least two points. Later (Houtgast and Namba, 1968)
four more points were added below λ 2977 Å.

Title: Equator-Pole Effect in the Central Intensities of Some Strong
Solar Fraunhofer Lines
Authors: Burger, Marijke; Houtgast, J.
1969SoPh....9..296B Altcode:
Uncorrected central intensities of the Fraunhofer lines NaD1
and D2, Mgb1 and b2, and Hβ have
been determined at a number of points along the S-W limb of the sun,
from equator to pole, using photographic spectra taken at the Locarno
station of the Göttingen Observatory. No significant pole-equator
variation could be found in excess of the observational errors which
are of the order of 2%.

compared with absolute intensities given by other authors.

Title: A New Estimate of the Strength of the Magnetic Field of the
Planet Venus
Authors: Houtgast, J.; van Sluiters, A.
1962Natur.196..462H Altcode:
IN some earlier publications1, attention was directed to
the behaviour of the geomagnetic activity around the dates of lower
conjunction of Venus. It appeared that, especially at times of weak
solar activity and with conjunctions, where Venus passed the Sun at
a small angular distance, seen from the Earth, a screening effoct of
Venus on the solar corpuscula was found from 6 days before up to 1
day after the date of conjunction. An estimate of the strength of the
magnetic field of Venus met with difficulties.

Title: Indication of a Magnetic Field of the Planet Venus
Authors: Houtgast, J.
1955Natur.175..678H Altcode:
IF Venus had a magnetic field, it would at inferior conjunctions
influence the corpuscular streams from the sun to the earth. We
should expect a variation, probably a decrease, of the corpuscular
intensity, which could reflect itself in the international daily
magnetic character figures.
