Based on high-resolution granulation photographs obtained on the
Stratoscope-I flight of August 17, 1959, a morphological study of
the evolution of exploding granule expansion rate is found to increase
linearly with size, with 1.7-3.2 km/s for granules with maximum attained
diameters of 3-5.5 arcsec. Granules with the shortest axis of 2.2 arcsec
are seen to develop the characteristic ring-like appearance with a round
darkening in the center, and the exploding granules are found to occupy
roughly 2.5 percent of the solar surface at any moment. In a study of
the typical exploding granule, the size and intensity depression of
the central darkening are shown to evolve with granule expansion in
the rapidly growing phase, and the intensity drop is found to reach
25 percent of the granule brightness.

Actual profiles have for the first time been obtained of the high
excitation C I 5052-A line from individual granules and intergranular
regions, and Doppler shifts between the two regions. Although these
structures are only partially resolved, due to smearing by instrumental
and atmospheric stray light, a simple correction for this effect points
to convective velocities of a few kilometers/sec in the photospheric
layers where the 'white light' granulation is observed. It is not yet
possible, however, to determine the absolute values of the upward and
downward velocities in the graduation and the possible influence of
the five-min oscillation.

Observational features of exploding granules that may be of some
importance for the theory of unsteady convection are discussed on the
basis of a time sequence of high-definition photographs of the solar
granulation obtained during a Stratoscope flight. The evolutionary
pattern of exploding granules is summarized schematically, and
several characteristic features are derived from a study of seven such
granules. The exploding-granule phenomenon is interpreted qualitatively
in terms of cooling at the photospheric level and the subsequent sinking
of cold matter at the center of a granule due to loss of buoyancy

Title: A Morphological Study of the Solar Granulation

Some properties of the photospheric granulation near the centre of the
quiet sun have been investigated on the basis of two high-definition
Stratoscope photographs. We obtain (1) a number density of 54 granules
per 10″ × 10″, (2) a total number of granules on the whole surface
of 6.3 × 10<SUP>6</SUP>, (3) a mean cell diameter of 1″.5 or 1100 km
and a mean granule diameter of 1″.2 or 850 km, the difference of 250
km being ascribed to the mean width of the dark intergranular lanes,
(4) frequency distributions of cell diameters and granule diameters
(Figures 1 and 2), and (5) an isophotal map in relative intensity
(Figure 3). In general, larger granules are brighter than smaller
granules (Figure 4). Cross-section profiles are shown for some granules
and intergranular lanes (Figures 5 and 6). These quantities have not
yet been corrected for the finite resolution of the telescope.

The high excitation of neutral oxygen observed in the flash spectrum is
attributed to the resonance fluorescence with the hydrogen radiation
field in the chromosphere: Owing to the coincidence of ionization
potentials for these two elements, the strong Lyman continuous radiation
would ionize oxygen atoms highly and overpopulate the excited levels
through the subsequent recombination process, giving the ionization
and excitation temperatures comparable with those for hydrogen. `
he resonance excitation of oxygen with Lyman- line emission is also
considered. A brief estimation shows that, in the chromosphere, thin
effect may be less important than that of Lyman continuum.
