The Design

With a shining wood case and no top carrying handle this radio cannot be called a portable. It is clearly a table model, intended for use as a second set in a city home, or in places where no power is available. In the sixties, all houses in the Netherlands were elctrified, but some recreational bungalows and primitive places (like the famous plaggenhuts) were not, and battery radios were still used a lot in ships.

Ten years before, tube radios were still in use in such places, like the Philips LX381B. In the late fifties, transistor radios appeared and although most models were portables, the table top market was also served with models like this Novak. The receiving qualities of this little energy-economic device are impressive. It receives dozens of MW stations even during the day, and tunes LW and SW as well. Short Wave will be of limited use, because the simple dial does not allow accurate and stable tuning.

This Object

It is a miracle for me how the chassis was mounted to the front plate; I didn't manage to take these parts apart (didn't want to break anything) and therefore I couldn't cleanse the front as thoroughly as I had wished. Also, I couldn't repair the play in the tuning knob. I can't imagine that this radio is very worthy, but I somehow like it a lot and sometimes take it outside in the garden to listen to goldie oldie stations.
