The Design

Small components like the TA7642 (or MK484) IC make it possible to construct very simple radio projects. The IC does not drive a speaker, but Conrad did a very nice job in combining the IC with a single transistor, and loudspeaker, a cardboard cabinet (retro style), and antenna and knobs, for 10 euros.

After soldering a few components on the little PCB, the project looks like the pile of junk on the left, and after finishing you get the right picture. The project is fairly easy to build. Only everything is very tiny! If you start your radio hobby in your fifties you may find it difficult to see these small things.

This Object

This Conrad kit was a present for guest speakers in my Security course. I bought one extra and assembled it with my wife.

Though Ineke usually likes the radios I repair and display a lot, this was her first introduction to the more technical side of the hobby. This little project really introduces her to many concepts of electronics: polarity of caps, PCB, speaker, Ferrite rod, the works.

I repeat my compliments for Conrad to bring out this fun package for ten euros. Note on the left how small the printed board is! But I demonstrated each of the steps once for Ineke and then she could do it all. When the radio was ready, I worked immediately so there was all reason to be proud.
