The Design

The LA4192 is a small opamp based audio amplifier. Typical supply voltage is 9V and it contains two opamps. They can be used for stereo and deliver 2.3W per channel into a 4 Ohm load. Alternatively, the two amps can be used as a bridged amplifier to deliver 4.7W into an 8 Ohm load. Needless to say, this small home amplifier uses the stereo mode.

The PCB seems to be some standard thing, used in various consumer products. It has markings Model MMS111 Rev B, Wan Nien 04V0 (94V0), and E88653(S), but I haven't been able to figure out their meaning.

This Object

The amplifier board was salvaged from a wrecked Philips PC speaker set that I used before for some failed experiments. The board is fed directly from a power transformer, and contains rectifying diodes. So, it can be supplied with either AC or DC. I used the amplifier for some years, built into an emptied plastic box of nails. If the source had volume control, the amp need not be in view and can be ugly.

To use it with my Philips A6X38AT tuner, it will be in sight because the tuner has no volume control. So I picked up some wood box from the thrift shop for this amplifier. I combined it with the power transformer of a scrap clock radio. I installed a main switch to eliminate vampire draw (which would be about 7€ per year otherwise).
