The Design

This nice radio has five wave bands, of which many users will only listen the FM band. The four presets make it very convenient to just tune in to four favorite stations, and not bother with any tuning at all.

The transformer in this radio is expensive; when switched off, the radio still consumes 2.4W, or about 5 euro's per year.

This Object

It is very worthwhile to apply some power saving measures to this nice radio. It can play on 6V batteries, just four D-cells. However, when plugged in the mains, the transformer alone will take 2.4W continuously even when radio is switched OFF (consumption is 3W when ON). This is one of the highest Vampire Draws I have observed in my portable radio's!

The power supply delivers about 9.2V and current draw is then about 100mA. After installing a DC jack (center pin is PLUS), the radio plays on external DC sources as well. On a USB charger, the radio takes about 0.1W when OFF and 0.5W playing. On a 9V supply, it takes about 1.3W to play. Considering that most radios play rarely, the reduction in power loss is significant. The downsize of switched mode power supplies is that AM reception is disturbed, as well as FM reception of weak stations.
