The Design

The radio is a beautiful example of a hybrid: it uses transistors in those circuits where they performed best at that time, and tubes where they were at their best. The good old AM converter workhorse ECH81, introduced as early as 1952, was still used 20 years after! The tuning indicator EMM803 is quite special: it contains two indicator systems in one bottle, one is a classical to indicate optimal tuning like an EM84, the other is a binary indicator to signal stereo reception (the radio has a built-in decoder).
At the utmost right of the chassis you can see the two output transformers and the two ELL80s next to them. The vertical PCB is the stereo decoder.

This Object

Despite its good condition, this set was scrapped simply because nobody has room for such a dinosaur. I used a loudspeaker for the EF80 radio and sold the chassis to Martin Ackroyd.
