The Design

The bottom of the set is marked Made in Japan 508. Fred Mason wrote me to interpret this as month 08 in a year ending in 5. The look of the set make 1965 and 1985 unlikely to me.

Despite its fancy design and many controls, among hams and professional listeners a device like this was considered a cheapo. Yet it was quite usable on the shortwave bands, and even allows to overhear ham communication, which is SSB (Single Side Band) modulated. A 7 on the Hoen Scale.

This Object

The first owner of this radio was a Berlin ham operator, who carried through many modifications but eventually gave it to his radio pal in Zeist. The Zeist ham used the set for some time and gave it away to his friend who was a vicar. The vicar bought a better radio, and this one was sold during a fund-rising action, where I bought it. With its 30 controls it was my daughter's favorit when she was small.
