The Design

The PJ4 tube tester was designed by Piet van Schagen, nick Peter Johanzen. Following contact with an Italian collector, dozens were shipped to Italy. In 1991 an article about the PJ4 (Peter Johanzen 4 Volt tube tester) was published in the RHT. This picture shows an original PJ4 as it was produced by the PJ shop.

Testing is easy. Insert the tube, and the meter will immediately react if the filament is not interrupted (filament ceck). Then push the little button, and the meter will again react if there is emission. A tube that succeeds both test is probably useful in a radio.

This Object

Following the publication in the RHT, many hobbyists built the PJ4. This one has some scrap FM dial (numbers from 88 to 104) as a meter, it has a primitive tube base, and the batteries outside on the back rather than inside. This clearly classifies it as a wannabee from scrap parts.

The PJ4 is indeed very handy to quickly check four or five pin tubes. On the right you see it testing an A415, and in the mirror you see the battery pack on the back.
