The Design

By 1960, Philips had perfected the art of producing good radio's using the standard "chip set" UCH81, UBF80, UCL82, UY89. It was also used in the bottom model B0X15U, and the later B2X40U and B3X40U. This model, with three bands and quite good sound quality, is one of the finest sets in this category.

This B3X00U is quite sensitive, it works quite well already with the built in antenna's: ferrite rod for Long/Medium Wave, and plate antenna for Short Wave. So, all one needs to do after buying it, is carry it home, put the plug in socket, and turn on to play.

The construction is extremely simple: the chassis, a PCB, is mounted to the front, as is the speaker and tuning mechanism. To access the internal parts, all one needs to do is remove the back cover.

This Object

The tubes all tested 100%, the dial light was OK. I replaced 11 capacitors, then the radio worked. There was a short in the tuning cap, which I remedied by bending one of the plates a little. Tuning was very noisy, and I unhooked the spring between the tuning and band switch axes.

The aluminium strips are almost always gone. I ordered a roll of nickle strip from Ali to replace these decorative strips. I never worked with nickle before, but it turned out to be quite easy. The very thin strip can even be cut into shape with scissors (I can't garantee sharpness after repeated nickle cutting, so use and old pair). I glued the strips with white hobby glue.

The case was very dull, but I restored a memory of the shine with Meubeline.
