The Design

The radio has a nice dial that is built in front of the cabinet.
Philips is notorious for their weirdly complicated dial drive schemes. In this radio, the dial pointer rotates over 180 degrees, fully in sync with the tuning capacitor. Most manufacturers would drive the whole assembly with a single chord, running over the knob axis and the capacitor, and place the pointer on the same axis. Not so Philips! The knob drives the wheel on which the pointer is placed, using two pieces of wire. Then, from this wheel to the condenator drive right behind it, there are again two wires, steel this time, running through bowden cables. Fortunately, in this radio everything is reasonably well within reach. Moreover the chord didn't need replacement.

This Object

The letter E in the serial number E3440 means that the site of manufacturing was Philips Eindhoven.
When I opened the radio, I observed that somebody had already worked on it. The loudspeaker wires were replaced by shiny yellow ones, and an extra filter cap was placed parallel to C1.

This earlier maintenance didn't include replacement of capacitors. I replaced 10, including the coupling capacitor. The tubes measured a bit weak, but for the weakest one (the mixer) I didn't have a replacement in store, so I put it back and found all bands working.
