The Design

Not many battery radios have as many as 8 tubes. And even fewer consume as little power as this radio: the complete tube radio with 8 tubes including a tuning eye, consumes about 1W of battery power. I run it from a 90V battery, from which it draws 8mA (0.7W) and from two 1.2 NiMH cells, giving about 250mA (0.3W). The DL96 output tube has been the most efficient tube ever designed: it was able to deliver 1/3 of the power (filament plus plate) to the speaker.

Sound samplePLAY SOUND   The radio has a treble control combined with bass switch. The bass reproduction is quite strong. Half way this fragment you hear the beass switch being operated, and basses come to full life.

This Object

The radio came complete and it was quite easy to repair it. I replaced most paper caps. Unfortunately, its most striking feature, the stain in the speaker cloth, could not be removed. After a few years, sometimes the sound dropped suddenly; I found that the socket for DA96 was bad, and replaced it in August 2014.
