The Design

Philips took advantage of the upcoming digital age with this super PLL receiver, controlled by two microprocessors. It is a double conversion superhet.

The receiver is controlled by two 4-bit microprocessors of type MSM5840 (clock frequency: 4.2MHz). The versions for export to Italy and Germany were restricted to frequencies below 26100 kHz, to discourage listening to the illegal 27Mc.

Sound samplePLAY SOUND   Using my special Open Coil antenna I can receive MW Pirates from the north of the country. Radio Hooiberg making DX contacts on 1653kHz (Dec. 8, 2013).

This Object

The D2999 comes in two variations, where one tunes only to 26,1 MHz for countries where listening 27Mc was discouraged. Unfortunately my set is of this limited type, so I can't use it to overhear Citizen Band transmissions.
