The Design

During the nineteen fifties, FM became more and more common in the living room. In the same era, Philips tried to expand its market by introducing a novel idea: a second radio in the house. They built cheap radios for use in the kitchen or parents' bedroom. This model combines the two efforts: it is cheap, but still has the FM band.

The power supply uses an autotransformer so that the RF tubes can have parallel-fed filaments. The LF tubes have series filaments. Tuning is inductive.

This Object

Some people blame Philips for the lack of fuses; this model is quite the opposite because it is equiped with four of them. The fuse for the filaments was placed in a dirty holder, causing complete disfunction. It took me longer than it should… because the other three tubes were glowing normally, I didn't suspect the glow circuit at first.
