The Design

This very nice little portable was available in different versions. The /23 model has Tropical bands instead of Long Wave.

The output amplifier consists of two opamps (in the BA5206 IC), switched in stereo for headphone, and as a bridge amplifier for the small internal speaker. To this end, the headphone jack has two switchs built in, that are operated by the insertion of the plug.

The radio has no flexibility in antenna usage. An additional jack to connect an external antenna would be nice, and also, Philips missed the opportunity to use the headphone chord as antenna, when plugged in. The latter would make it easy to walk around while listening, the radio in the pocket.

This Object

I opened the radio to glue the dial cover plate, and this picture shows the inside. The cramped cabinet leaves little space for a speaker, next to the already tiny dial. A frequency counter would occupy less space, allowing a better speaker and more precise tuning!

Under the dial you can see the extremely tiny coils. It is hard to believe, but this radio is fully analogue with 12 bands, and each shortwave band has its own antenna and oscillator coil!
