The Design

Plano was the name for a line of radios started in 1958 with the B5X84A. Similar radios, with the same size and the same tubes, were sold until 1964 or 65. This is one of the later planos.

The early planos had two output amplifiers so that stereo records could be played. From about 1963 the planos were also fitted with stereo demultiplexers to hear FM broadcasts in stereo.

This Object

In this radio I had to replace the ECC83 preamp tube because one side was completely dead, quite uncommon with these signal tubes. Then I soldered one wire, and the thing played like new.
