During the seventies a lot of Soviet electronic equipment came to the West. At some time I heard that Western trading companies sometimes had to accept the stuff as payment for deliveries to the Soviet Union because after delivery (and consumption!) it turned out there was no money to pay. The Russian equipment was popular among hobbyists and ham amateurs, who could suddenly afford a laboratory they had never dreamt of before.
