The Design

Socora stands for Societe des Constructions Radios and was a Brussels-based firm selling assembly kits. In the fourties, these were considerably cheaper than assemblied sets, and for many people the only way to afford a radio. In the inside, you can see the four tubes plus magic eye, and the power transformer that is partly in the chassis.

Sound samplePLAY SOUND   A song about the sound of this radio? You are only coming through in (Long, Medium, and Short) Waves, not in (Frequency) Modulation. Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying. In 1979, when Pink Floyd played Comfortably Numb on their album The Wall, most pop music was listened on AM radios. FM channels were used for more serious culture: classical music.

This Object

Repairing the radio was not very difficult, and I gave it an outside treatment because the varnish was not so nice anymore, and neither was the grille cloth. The photo left shows the radio before that treatment.
This photo shows the external loudspeaker connection before treatment: the jacks were connected to the output transformer primary (including the output tube plate!) instead of the secondary. Touching these jack could be lethal.

It was a present for a lady born in the same year, for her sixtieth birthday.
