Layzer, David

Constructing the universe

Tijdschrift/boek

Scientific American Library, 1984.

Abstract

Layzer: Aristoteles: mathematical regularities are abstractions of surface appearances. Galileo, Newton: mathematical regularities are the very heart of reality.

Kant: physical laws structure experience, they are truths about the way we interact with the (an essentially unknowable) world.

Mach: physical laws (mathematical models) are nothing more than economical ways of representing experiences and predicting future observations (they don't explain fenomena, they merely describe them).
