Modelbouw/Mathematical Modelling (Fall 2012, UvA)

Introduction to Applied Mathematics and Modelling (http://www.cwi.nl/~jason/Classes/modelling/)

Goal: To understand the process of mathematical modelling of practical problems from various application fields (molecular dynamics, astrophysics, chemistry, biology, fluid and solid mechanics)

Book: Introduction to the Foundations of Applied Mathematics, by Mark. H. Holmes (Springer 2009). Book website.

Meets (2012):
Weeks 36 - 49, except week 43
(Sep. 3 - Dec. 7, 2012 except 22, 23 Oct.)
Lectures: Tuesdays 13:00-15:00, Science Park 904, G0.05 (t/m week 42), G2.02 (thereafter)
Practical sessions: Wednesday 9:00-11.00, Science Park 904, A1.04 (t/m week 42), G5.29 (thereafter)

Summary: The course is an introduction to applied analysis and modelling. A number of mathematical methods that are essential for this subject will be introduced (scale invariance, variational methods, asymptotics). Attention will be given to the principles of modelling in the form of differential equations, for a number of phenomena: such as classical mechanics, reaction equations, diffusion, fluid flows. The analysis of the contructed models will also be covered. With this knowledge, some more specific processes can be studied, such as population dynamics under climate change.

Methodology: lectures and problem sessions

Assessment: You will be evaluated on the basis of 3-4 projects, each requiring some analysis, possibly a bit of programming, and a short report.
